Essie Weingarten, founder and global creative director of essie, is a beauty icon and is the official authority on color. She founded essie in New York City in 1981. Today, essie is recognized by beauty professionals, industry insiders, celebrities and consumers for its quality, cutting-edge color and nail care.
Essie began her career as a buyer at the exclusive New York boutique department store Henri Bendel, but dreamed of starting her own business. Perceiving a lack of innovation in nail polish, she set out to develop a collection of polishes. Her first collection featured 12 stunning nail colors with witty names, and Essie set out to promote them in Las Vegas. Salons loved them, as did their high-end clientele, and the brand’s popularity grew overnight. Thirty-one years and more than 900 nail colors later, essie cosmetics is still a favorite among beauty and fashion editors, celebrities, top manicurists and sophisticated women around the world.
Essie has garnered numerous awards from magazines and industry organizations including the Achiever Award from Cosmetic Executive Women, a US-based organization that honors women who have had a major impact on the beauty industry. She is regularly featured in publications and has appeared on many TV programs internationally. essie was acquired by L’Oreal in April 2010.
