Rabbi Melissa Buyer began her journey in Jewish education as a dean of Students at Milken Community High School in Los Angeles. From 2002-2006 she served as the director of religious school, youth and camp programs for LA’s Stephen S. Wise Temple, where she was responsible for a number of innovations. In 2011 she brought many of those innovations, including her nationally recognized pilot program TiLearn, to Temple Israel in New York. TiLearn, which blends on-site learning with distance learning, was recently featured in The Jewish Week.
Rabbi Buyer created the visual and interactive family service Rockin’ Shabbat, and she co-leads Temple Israel’s Shabbat Live service. She also assisted in creating new adult learning opportunities such as partnering with the widely acclaimed Skirball Center and hosting their first-ever satellite campus.
Rabbi Buyer serves as the chair of the Limmud Taskforce to reimagine Jewish education for the Reform Movement’s Camps Eisner and Crane Lake. She also serves on the Central Conference of American Rabbi’s Children and Youth Siddur Committee. In January 2011, she co-chaired the National Association of Temple Educators National Conference in Seattle, Washington. The topic of this conference was her true passion: Jewish Education and Technology.
