After Sara Merson, a Palm Beach Gardens native, fell in love with Israel during a Birthright Israel trip a few years ago, she found herself travelling back every summer on different advocacy trips. When Sara graduated from the University of Florida, she chose to participate in MASA’s Israel Teaching Fellows program to spend one meaningful year in Israel before making aliyah. Well past the date of her MASA volunteer program, Sara, 23, remains in Israel and now calls the city of Ashdod her home.
Numerous trips to the downstairs bomb shelter have become part of Sara’s daily routine, as they have for so many Israelis. This situation is unlike anything she has ever dealt with before. A talented singer who has been successful in the audition process and is expected to be a contestant on the upcoming season of Israel’s version of “The Voice,” Sara recorded a version of Matisyahu’s “One Day” in a bomb shelter. The video, which includes footage of her boyfriend’s family taking cover as the air raid siren sounds as well as clips from news broadcasts showing the damage caused by rockets in Ashdod, has made waves across the Internet. Sara is proud to show people around the world a little bit of what is happening on her side of the conflict.
