Susie Gelman is the co-chair of JFNA's Israel Religious Expressions Platform (iREP), a new initiative that will explore and recommend areas of support for civil society issues in Israel, including freedom of choice in marriage. Susie previously served as the North American co-chair of JFNA's 2013 General Assembly in Jerusalem. During the past 35 years, she was a three-term president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, as well as that Federation's vice president for Campaign, secretary, major gifts chair, and Campaign Chair for young leadership. She has chaired or co-chaired many other activities for the DC Federation including Super Sunday, the Capital Campaign for the 90's, and the Israel Emergency Campaign, and she serves as a trustee for the United Jewish Endowment Fund.
Other local, national and international leadership positions include inaugural chair of the Birthright Israel Foundation (where she still serves on the board), co-chair of UJC (now JFNA) Israel, and co-chair of the 2003 UJC General Assembly in Jerusalem.
Susie is a past president of Georgetown Day School and served on its board of trustees for twelve years. She is a member of the board of governors of The Hebrew University and has previously served on the boards of Adas Israel Congregation, the Nesiya Institute, the Phillips Collection, the Washington Ballet, and the Greater Washington Educational Television Association (WETA). Susie co-chaired the Jewish Foundation Advisory Council and served on the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. She participated in the Wexner Heritage Program and received the Jerome J. Dick Young Leadership Award as well as the JCC of Greater Washington's Benjamin Ourisman Award for Civic Achievement.
